ur Mission collection pays tribute to a unique style rooted in the Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe as well as the traditional furnishings of the American Southwest. Popularized in the early 1900s, it was both a social reaction to industrialization and an aesthetic response by mission furniture makers to Victorian ornamentation. The Arts and Crafts movement in Europe inspired designers with its qualities of simplicity and use of materials. It can be seen as a prelude to Modernism, in which pure forms would be applied to industrial production.
As Mission furniture makers, our style is characterized by a return to handcrafted basics, an emphasis on hearth and home, and utilitarian design with a clean, correct, pronounced geometry. Sturdy, solid oak construction is the norm for mission furniture, in the finishes you see here; leather often cushions the chairs. We hope the original principles of "honesty, simplicity, and usefulness" are reflected in our interpretations of this unmistakable style, hand-made by experienced mission furniture manufacturers and craftsmen. |
